Being a part of Community Service team has always been my dream since I was young, but I was not able to achieve it until my freshmen year. Since then community Service has been a part of my life. Throughout the last three years, I have been taking up different responsibilities and leadership roles such as teaching the local students, hosting several fundraising events for example La Magnifique(fashion shows), being one of the organizer in Learn then Earn, orphanage group, environmental group and being the web manager for two consecutive years. These experience had taught me several lessons, inspired me to be a better leader and made me a responsible leader. This year, I hope to inspire more future leaders to help the community and make changes in people's lives. “A small change can make a big difference."

Vice President - Tiffany

Being the only freshman in a program called Learn Then Earn two years ago (2013-2014 school year) allowed me to experience educating the local children residing in areas near my school English. Not only was I provided with mental rewards at the end of each day when the children have filled up their notebooks with new vocabulary, ideologies still fresh in their brains, I was able to re-discover my adoration and passion for teaching. I enjoy the position of authority not only due to the power i possess over the students but also because the teacher is the most educated individual room with the most knowledge pertaining to the topic of discussion. Going on trips to local hospitals, HIV/IDS clinics, and psychiatric wards, the members of the health care group (which I was a part of) interact with the patients to bring smiles to their faces, even if it is merely for a temporary moment. I remember leading a dancing activity on a tour to a psychiatric ward in town. Upon seeing the sincere smiles and laughter of the dancing patients, I couldn't help but to do the same. Volunteering warms everyone's hearts, and being in a position of ability, I believe I should help those in need. In turn, not only will I be able to encourage civic responsibility, I will be able to strengthen the community and improve the quality of living - we will finally be able to make a difference. This is why I am a part of Community Service.

Secretary - Cherry

Growing up, I just wasn’t exposed to the outside reality as much. I didn’t know that there were children that was getting education or vaccinations outside my activity space. I was stuck in that fake reality bubble- that was until this ISM community service team popped it. Suddenly, there were other people in the world; it wasn’t just about me, never has been. Today, CS has become more than just a club to me. CS has shown me a world outside of my own. It has taught me lots from mere teamwork to meaningful lasting friendships. It shows me the simple joy that can be achieved solely from helping people other than myself. Being a part of CS makes me proud.

Treasurer - Valarie

Web/Communication Manager - Thomas Lin

I first got into Community Service long before ISM got a CS Program. It started long ago, when I would spend weekends at deaf schools and orphanages playing with the kids and donating different assortments of items. When I heard that ISM was starting CS, I immediately got on board. I was one of the seven founding members of Environmental Club, and I have remained in the program in the four years since then. I have always looked for a way that I could contribute more to the group, and so I volunteered to take the Web Manager position when it became available. To me, this position is not just a way to get a good resume entry, but a way that I can actually spread the word about community service. CS has shown me many things and taught me so much, so this is just a small way to return the favor.

Environmental Group Leader - Lin Khant Oo

What started as a small group of three people 3 years ago has turned into a group of 25 with many waiting to get on. Doing environmental community service is different from other community services because you don't see the direct impact: you don't see the Earth smile. But huge invisible impacts we can make if we work together has always been what motivated me to keep going and to take on leadership roles. And I believe that that is also what keeps Environmental Group going.

AV Manager - Thomas Aung

Public Relations Manager - Thu Thu & Charles

Activity Coordinator - Mi Mi

Community Service is a reason why I smile for small little things. Being a member of this committee since my sophomore year made me realized that spending time with less unfortunate kids can have positive influences on their lives and mine as well. We, as a whole, create laughs, fun, and memories that will be ingrained for eternity. There never has been a day when the members of this group left without putting a smile on the kids’ faces. Their smiles are definitely contagious and I believe all the members of the CS will continue to make better changes in the future.

Not a day goes by that I am not proud of all the efforts Community Service students put into making a difference in their community. It's wonderful to watch the community service program at ISM take on a life of its own. There is something unique going on here! I believe it's a combination of living where we live, and the ISM students, many of whom are raised by their parents to have a deep feeling of moral responsibility to not just sit back and allow things to go on as they are. That's what I love about it, we do not sit back and let poverty, poor education, neglected orphans, disabled children, and aged grandmas and grandpas exist without DOING something about it. I feel so fortunate to be a part of this unique, caring, giving, and loving community at ISM!
