The Alter Eco
Mission Statement The ISM Environmental Group focuses on a larger goal - to save the world- literally. In Myanmar, a developing country, we are trying to help it develop towards a more environmentally friendly future. As of right now, we are trying to educate, reform, and remake the neighborhood around the school, and hopefully, slowly improve the country on a national level. These goals include raising awareness of environmental issues and the consequences of one's actions and using that awareness by actually doing something to lessen the environmental footprint that our country creates in the world.
The structure of the group is slightly different from last year; instead of having two separate groups, (Grey and Green) the team decided to have one cohesive group that is being divided to four different subgroups (Operation Purification, Fundraise, Balcony Garden, Awareness). Each of these subgroups has their own roles and responsibilities, but at the end of the meeting they will have to report and share their progress with the whole group. This allow deeper communication within the group so that everyone understand the progress of other subgroups. Other than systematic structure, the Environmental Group is fully devoted to freedom of creativity. Any group member can come up with their own ideas and share it with the group. All ideas are to be respected by everyone in the group, and we will collaborate to make the idea come true. We will not stick to the old tradition and repeat similar projects because we seek innovation to build Environmental Group into a greater group. |

Our Projects In Progress
Earthwise News
- Our own personal newsletter will be coming both on this website and on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/earthwisenewsmyanmar, so go read that!
Operation Purification (2015 - Present)
- For this year, Environmental Club is redoing Operation Purification after the initial success of our first trial. However, we are looking into more sustainable changes to the environment, given that the location for the first OP returned to its initial state of raggedness soon after the event.
The Play Garden
- This is a long term project that the group has taken on. This works towards rebuilding a worn down playground and keeping it open for the underprivileged neighborhood children. We will keep this updated on how the event is progressing

Our Past

Operation Purification (2014)
When: December 6th 2014
Where: Trash pile near the public playground between the High School and Middle Campuses.
Who: The Environmental Group, Outsourced Volunteer Students and Local Volunteers
What: A clean-up and "beautification" of a small area.
Why: Inspired by an anonymous group in Bangalore, India http://www.storypick.com/anonymous-group-people-bangalore-something-amazing-story; to remove a mess from the neighbourhood; to discourage further use of that area as a trash pile; to raise awareness of the environment to everyone who sees it
How: The volunteers came around 9am to begin cleaning up the area. With about 30 people working, we got the branches, trash and muck cleaned up in no time. Half of the volunteers began work on painting and the other worked on the small bits of trash. A few volunteers cleaned the sewer of solid trash using long grabbing sticks. After only 3 and a half hours, 5 rats, a red weaver ant nest, a bunch of millipedes and a lot of hard work, we finished beautifying the area
Now what?: Next semester, we plan to have another operation like this. Keep a look out for further announcements.
Thanks to: Ms. Valerie and Ms. Regina, for being our supervisors; Tim, Thomas, Ron and Lin, for organising the event; our volunteers, for being there to help. Special Thanks to our three drivers, for moving the trash to the proper landfill; the local man, for offering his help, baskets and rakes and Htoo Paing's dad, for the shovel
